A dead period means college coaches cannot have any in-person contact with recruits or their families — no campus visits, no off-campus evaluations, no in-person meetings of any kind. Written communication like email is still permitted, but the in-person door is completely closed.

Dead Period vs. Quiet Period — The Difference

The NCAA uses four recruiting period designations, and families often confuse them. The dead period is the most restrictive. During a dead period, coaches cannot watch recruits compete, cannot visit a recruit's school, and cannot meet with recruits or their families anywhere — on campus or off. The only permitted contact is written: email, letters, and questionnaires.

A quiet period is less restrictive. Coaches can still meet with recruits on the college campus during a quiet period, but they cannot travel to see recruits compete or visit their high schools. A contact period is when coaches can do both — evaluate recruits in person off campus and have in-person contact.

When Dead Periods Occur

Dead periods are sport-specific and change annually. They typically fall around major academic calendar events — final exams, holidays, and the start of semesters — and around NCAA championship periods when coaches are focused on their current roster. The specific dates vary by sport and division. A dead period for D1 women's soccer does not apply to D1 baseball. Always check the NCAA website for your sport's current recruiting calendar before making campus visit decisions.

Families who schedule unofficial visits during dead periods without checking the calendar often arrive to find coaches legally unable to meet with them. It is a wasted trip that could have been avoided entirely. See Phase 3 of the free D1ProjX Blueprint for how to time campus visits correctly and what to do before and after every visit.

What This Means for Your Athlete

Dead periods do not stop recruiting — they redirect it. If you are in a dead period and cannot visit campus, use the time to send emails, update your highlight reel, and follow up on open conversations in writing. The families that stay active during dead periods with professional written communication through the Phase 2 Recruiting Email Guide are the ones coaches remember when the contact period opens back up.

NCAA rules vary by sport and division. Verify current rules for your specific sport at NCAA.org before making recruiting decisions.
